Bariatric surgery evolved as a specialty since the 1970’s and a great many different operations have been developed, tested, modified, improved upon and in many cases abandoned. The greatest revolution came in the late 1990’s when all these operations became available laparoscopically and this brought with it great benefits of safety and lower complications.
Bariatric Surgery Options
- Sleeve Gastrectomy
- Single Anastomosis Stomach-Ileal Bypass With Sleeve Gastrectomy (SASI-S)
- Omega Loop Gastric Bypass
- Laparoscopic Gastric Banding
Each operation has advantages and disadvantages and well defined outcomes.
In Australia for much of 2000-2010 the dominant operation was LAGB. Now this has faded away and the Sleeve has achieved predominance with a small number of Bypasses done as well.
Careful consideration
You must read carefully about the different choices, although this unit’s main preference is sleeve gastrectomy with the bypasses reserved for some situations of revisional surgery or other unusual circumstances.
This is a dynamic and ever evolving field. Who knows what the next 10 years will bring?
