On November 17th 2021 all three Private hospital organisations in WA That had previously allowed Bariatric surgery in 16-18yr olds announced that they were no longer supportive of surgery in this age group. This applies to all WA bariatric surgeons.
They have cited concerns about safety, the lack of activity in this cohort by Public hospital service and a perception of reputational risk if a complication were to occur.
A review of the guidelines for adolescent bariatric surgery is expected from our Professional Body ANZMOSS in the New Year and hopefully when this occurs the situation will be reversed, but until this time we are unable to offer patients a firm commitment on the surgery and date.
We are still committed to supporting patients in this age range and continue to lobby the private hospitals to change this decision.
We are still prepared to consult with patients in this age range to offer them non surgical advice and support.
