Mercy Bariatrics is committed to providing support for our Gastric Band patients and will also accept referrals from patients who have had a gastric band elsewhere and require a second opinion or fill adjustment/removal.
Gastric Band Support
Most anaesthetists now request fill removal before a general anaesthetic and we have an assessor available most days who can undertake this.
We understand that you may have had a Band placed interstate or are unable to see your original surgeon (although this is always the preferred first option).
We have become very experienced in assessing bands that are not functioning well and the steps needed to get people back on track. Sometimes all that is needed is an adjustment of fill volume and re-education as to correct band eating behaviour.
In most cases we aim to get this band to work for you but if this is not possible we will discuss band removal, repair, or revision to an alternative operation such as sleeve gastrectomy.
Our Assessment of Problem Bands May Include:
- Barium swallow to assess position and function of band and size of pouch.
- Endoscopy.
- Gastric volume assessment by rice-cream test meal.
- Dietician retraining.
We also offer our exclusive Back on Track program for patients struggling to lose weight even with a well functioning band.
Patients without private insurance may be seen for assessment and advice but revisional surgery in most cases will require private insurance or a significant personal outlay. Find out more about Costs & Finance.

Remember, reflux and frequent vomiting is a symptom that your band may be too tight or has slipped and should never be ignored. Speak to your surgical team if you are experiencing this.
