Mindless eating, that is, eating when you are not really hungry, is a common habit that can contribute to over weight and obesity. Large amounts of calories can be consumed when grazing in front of the television, at parties, at the cinema or when working at your desk.
Mindful Eating
After bariatric surgery, it is more important than ever to develop the positive habit of mindful eating. This involves observing the look, aroma, texture and taste of your food and savouring each mouthful.
Mindful eating includes setting aside adequate time to relax and enjoy your meal, chewing your food well, taking breaks between each mouthful and avoiding distractions such as the television, computer or phone while you are eating.
Mindful eating will allow you to eat the amount of food that leaves you feeling satisfied, not overfull.
Plan and prepare
Planning and preparing meals ahead of time will ensure that you avoid making last minute poor food choices and will help to maximise your nutrient intake. In turn, better nutrition will increase your energy levels and boost your immune system.
Next time… ask yourself
The next time you reach for the chocolate biscuits at afternoon tea or are tempted by the cakes in the bakery window, ask yourself…
- Am I really hungry?
- Will I feel good after eating this food?
- Is this supporting my goal of a healthier diet and lifestyle?
If the answer is no, you may wish to look for a non- food treat such as a massage or a new outfit. If you are peckish and would like a small but healthy snack, why not choose some delicious seasonal fruit, some crunchy mixed nuts or a fruit bliss ball.
Fruit Bliss Balls
- 1/2 cup dried apricots 1 tbsp white chia seeds
- 1/2 cup dates 1 tbsp sunflower seeds
- 1/4 cup desiccated coconut 1 tbsp natural almond spread
