Bariatric Surgery For Rural Patients
Mercy Bariatrics are committed to working with remote GP’s to enable Telehealth consultations with patients where possible.
To help minimise country patients travel requirements, we are very happy to undertake your initial consultation via a Skype Telehealth consult. When you obtain your referral from your GP, mention this to them, and we will be happy to contact them to see if it can be arranged.
Bariatric Assessment Day
When accepted for surgery, you will need to come down for your bariatric assessment program day with dietician, excercise physiologist and bariatric assessor.
Before Surgery
It may be possible for you to undertake your surgery around the same time if you don’t need to go on a VLCD diet before hand (usually if BMI<40), otherwise patients usually decide to go home pending their surgery date.
Typically this means 1-2 visits to Perth to get ready for the surgery.
Surgery
When you do have surgery, you need to stay in Perth for about 10-12 days post op, which is the period of maximal risk for complications, before flying or driving home.
We will also try to minimise travel to Perth to undertake the assessment program, and facilitate post-operative follow-up.
Specialist consultations in Perth are covered by the PATS scheme.
Follow-Up Visits
Follow-up visits for rural bariatric patients are typically at 2 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, 12 months and two years post op.
