Your Teen’s Obesity.
It doesn’t have to weigh them down!
Childhood and teen obesity is affecting an increasing number of Australians.
Bariatric surgery has helped thousands of adults turn their life and health around.
Come and hear how this solution might be right for your teens too.
Mercy Bariatrics has developed an exciting teenager focused program to prepare and
support your teen and their family. The program is aimed at 14-18 Y.O but children as young as 12 may be accepted based on their merits.
Teen Bariatrics? Team Bariatrics!
More About The Program
Delivering a Teen focussed program is very different to an adult program. Teenagers learn and think differently and we must make sure the information provided and the pace of preparation is appropriate to their age and stage. This will usually mean we have to spend more time with them making sure they are ready to make this decision.
We also want to deliver this program in a fun and engaging fashion. One of the features is that along the way our team members we will be issuing ” Challenges” to make sure your teen is committed to the program and the necessary lifestyle changes needed to make this surgery work to its best .
At the end of the program and before surgery is agreed upon, a final assessment by an independent Bariatric consultant will be arranged to confirm that your teen is ready to take this step and has achieved the necessary knowledge and understanding of the potential risks and consequences of their surgery.
Our surgeons have many years of experience in the field of Bariatrics. We have confidence in the operation of Sleeve Gastrectomy as being the current best vehicle for offering the most effective weight loss with the least risk of exposing your teen to long term nutritional complications.
Your teen will be seen by our Paediatrician (if <16) or Bariatrics physician (if >16) to make sure they have no illnesses related to their obesity such as diabetes or fatty liver. They will also be involved in your teens longterm management and support. Our Paediatricians all have a long experience with weight control medicine.
A specialist clinical psychologist will work closely with you and your caregivers both before and after surgery. Our team are here to make sure you are ready, motivated, resourced, and supported as you move through the surgical journey and beyond.
You will meet our psychologist before surgery who will work with you to uncover your unique psychosocial blueprint. From here we will be able to determine your strengths as an individual and family, as well as identify, and make a plan to manage and overcome psychological and social challenges that might impact your surgical outcomes both short and long-term.
Our team of excercise phsyiologists based in our Bariatric focussed Gym will assess your teens level of fittness and encourage them to re engage with excercise. Be prepared for some exciting and amazing challenges which will take your teen outside of their comfort zone and prove to them what they are capable of!
Our dietitians will teach you and your teen how to prepare for your surgery and achieve the best long term weight loss and health following the surgery. They will help you make better food choices to maximise your weight loss and maintain good nutrition.
In some cases they will help you achieve the preoperative weight loss needed to conduct the surgery safely. They are part of the key followup team after surgery
Our life coach and support group leader is your anchor person for achieving a great outcome after surgery . We deliver a success habits training course after your surgery to make sure that you get the best out of your sleeve. We hold monthly support group meetings and are developing a teen focussed club for our patients.
